A Historic Beginning

On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States.

His historic Presidential campaign began twenty-one months earlier on a frigid February 10, 2007, when thousands of expectant supporters braved the cold conditions to come to the Old State Capitol and hear him proclaim, “In the shadow of the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln once called on a divided house to stand together…
I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for the President of the United States.”

Senator Obama returned to the Old State Capitol on August 23, 2008, to introduce Senator Joe Biden as his Vice Presidential running mate.

Barack Obama’s appearances at the Old State Capitol have added to its legacy.  His name will now be added to those of Grant, Trumbull, Douglas and Lincoln.  All of these men came to this building hopeful and resolute and left to serve our nation and shape its history.
