“Who am I?” riddles are fun to answer and create because they can be very misleading. The text (or clues) of the riddle are more effective if they point to an object or abstract item that seems to be the opposite of what is described.

To create your own “Who am I?” riddle, start with the answer and then write the clues. This will make writing the riddle easier, and you’ll find that the double word meanings will be easier to use. The easiest “Who am I?” poems are ones that are written about an object.

Once you have the answers, begin writing the clues of the riddles. This can take some getting used to, and it may take you more than one try to create a really good riddle that stumps someone. Try listing the characteristics of the object that can seem ambiguous. For example, if the answer is to be a watch, writing clues about hands and a face are accurate but will lead the guesser to believe the answer is a person or other living creature. And make sure when writing “Who am I?” riddles that you leave out words typically associated with the item. In the watch example, you wouldn’t want to use the words tick, tock, watch or wrist, as these are frequently linked to the word watch and could quickly give away the answer.

Now, take a look at your list of words associated with your answer. Try using some synonyms to help throw off guessers and make the riddles a little more difficult. Simpler “Who am I?” riddles are a great tool to teach children about double meanings of words, but the most effective riddles use imagery, poetry, metaphors and allegories to describe the answer. These may be more difficult for children to discern as they could include vocabulary the child has yet to learn.
